Ronald Coase found long ago24 that firms continually explore ways to reduce costs and increase productivity by expanding or contracting in scope. In general, companies extend their boundaries to produce additional inputs or complements when they can outperform independent suppliers. Every firm is vertically integrated to some degree, and every firm is vertically limited on some margins. The “walled garden” of Apple embeds Apple’s Mac operating system on iPhones and limits phones to applications downloaded from the App Store. But processors, radios, and memory chips are purchased from suppliers; wide-area network connectivity is supplied (via contract) by a mobile carrier; and thousands of independent software developers write the programs approved for sale at the App Store, splitting revenues with Apple.
